This educational project is maintained by students and a work in progress.
Early in the morning, we departed towards Zaventem. Marking a smooth yet exciting first flight for our friend, Brent. Upon arrival we took a train to Oslo and enjoyed an exploratory walk to the hotel before settling in our room. Later in the evening, we went out to eat, and enjoyed a pleased walk back. The rest of the evening was calm and quiet, giving us the chance to recharge and fully prepare ourselves for the busy day ahead.
Today we started with a nice breakfast at the hotel. Then we left on foot to a natural history museum, where we had a climate workshop. At first, we had to sit in groups and were explained by an Italian woman. She started by asking us what our favourite activity is or who/what we like most. The idea was that we thought about how that could be ruined by climate change. After talking some more with each other, we watched a very short film showing how worse climate impacts animals, especially insects.
The following activities were divided into three different parts: climate change, its consequences and solutions to it. At the first part, the woman led us to a room where it was presented how the sun had an impact on our earth, both plants and animals. We were also given a few questions around climate change to test what exactly we knew. The second part, consequences, we were led to 'the dark room'. In it, we could see what would happen to the world if the earth warmed 1.5; 3 or 6 degrees. Then at the last part, we did little tests to see what kind of people we are to improve the climate. Each part also included a short film. Behind that, we did another little dialogue with different statements and to finish, we were fed a cricket.
In addition, after we had the workshop, we saw a few large greenhouses containing lots of different plants and even cacti.
In the afternoon, we had something to eat as a group and did a 7.5km city walk where we had to take photos at different points. To end the day, we all went for a nice dinner in the evening.
Today we left early again to start our busy day right away. In the morning, a visit to the school was on our schedule. Here we met Jens-Petter who will accompany us in the upcoming classes. We were given a tour of this gigantic school by him. This is a very different experience from the schools we know in Belgium. From athletics tracks, to skincare direction, to the more scientific directions. This is a huge school with a very wide range of offerings.
We had a small class about the Norwegian culture where we learned various things from trolls to some cuss words 🤫. They had also provided a delicious lunch for us at this school. After discovering our fellow students' sandbox, flying a drone and having lots of fun, we left again by bus and tram. Around 6pm, we arrived at a beautiful dining location in an old factory with many nice eateries. Here we had a great meal and made nice encounters with the “locals”.
To end the evening, we played a quiz back at the hotel. The winners with a score of 19/23 are ... Manon and Amélie!
On day 4, we started the day with a nice breakfast, followed by a happy birthday celebration for our friend Brent. After breakfast, we took the bus to school.
Once we arrived, we were welcomed once again by our new supervisor, Jens Petter. We started working on the sandbox project with our fellow Norwegian students. We began by setting up the camera on the Raspberry Pi, working in two separate groups. Once we finished, we took a short break and played football with the Norwegian students.
After our break, we had lunch in the cafeteria. Once we were done with lunch, we returned to our classroom to continue working on the sandbox. We encountered a problem: we couldn’t mount the projector at the correct angle above the sandbox. We needed a structure to support the projector in the right position. Our class and the Norwegian class had different ideas and opinions, but we came to a solution. The Norwegian students would set up a projector stand in the middle, supported by a metal construction.
We divided the work: one group worked on the metal construction, while the other marked everything to ensure precise drilling.
After getting the correct materials and making the kinetic sand, we took a break and socialized with our Norwegian classmates. After eating our dinner , we went to the hotel and surprised Brent for his birthday, with snacks and drinks. We ended our evening with playing some games.
This morning, we visited the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, and it was an unforgettable experience! We had a guided tour, and our guide shared the fascinating story of Alfred Nobel and his vision for the Peace Prize. Walking through the Nobel Field, we saw digital portraits of inspiring laureates like Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai. The Peace Prize Room showcased recent winners and their impact on the world.
At this moment there was a special exhibition about the current winner, Nihon Hidankyo. This is an organisation that fights for a world without nucleair weapons. It is founded by the survivors of the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
After the museum and lunch, we took a ferry that passed through the beautiful Norwegian fjorden.
In the afternoon we went on a RIB experience that also went in the fjorden. This boat however went way faster than the ferry, up to 55 knots (+100km/h). Then we sailed behind a cruise ship that made big waves where we jumped over with the boat. A thrilling experience for everyone!
In the evening we went to Mathallen, which is a place with a lot of different food stands, where we had a great meal!
We started the day as always with a nice breakfast at the hotel. Then we headed to RUD school. We could visit the biggest TESLA-centre in Norway. We got a tour of the showroom and the repair station. They showed us how the cars are repaired and how they use AI to manage their communication with customers and organize their planning.
After eating a healthy salad back at school, we headed to the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology. There, through interactive games and experiments such as driving a magnetic motor and performing CPR on a doll, we learned more about the laws of nature on Earth. We also explored the history of technology, where we could see the evolution of computers, music players, and transportation step-by-step as they were displayed for the public.
After an educational visit to the museum, we made time to relax and enjoy our last day in Oslo. We went to 'The Duckpin' to play mini-bowling (a variant of classic bowling). We enjoyed a nice dinner and drink of our choice at the restaurant, with the wonderful music of DJ R2 in the background. To end our last day on a high note, we sang songs for an hour in The Duckpin karaokebar, with an unexpected guest, Mr. Jens-Petter, joining us.
