LCRA Charter

Chartered February 1, 1988 as the Lee County International Reading Association Council, this organization, later renamed the Lee County Reading Association, has a rich history of promoting literacy. From reading booths at the county fair, to delivering books to doctor's offices and laundromats, and using Scholastic bonus points to purchase Goodnight Moon for babies born at Central Carolina Hospital (continued today by Delta Rho) LCRA focused its efforts on making reading materials available to children in our community. 

Two scholarships were created in memory of former teachers who were passionate about reading: Wanda Jeffries and Katy Yo Martin. Each year students interested in a career in education are eligible and encouraged to apply for these funds. 

As educator needs changed and renewal credits were thrust upon us, the organization sought and received permission for members to receive one credit for consistent attendance during the school year. 

Today, we are an organization that promotes literacy through participation in the annual Young Authors Writing and Art Competition. 

Speakers keep us abreast of research and disseminate knowledge to aid in problems related to reading.  We have proven to be responsive to the needs of our members by offering remote meetings during a global pandemic.
