Ledyard Middle School offers a variety of athletic and co- curricular activities for students.
Interscholastic athletics adhere to CIAC and ECMS league guidelines and LMS administration seeks to have academic guidelines and high standards for participation in all co-curriculars. Students who are failing to participate in the classroom will be not permitted to participate in co-curriculars. Academic grade guidelines will be strictly enforced for interscholastic athletics.
Any activity that requires physical activity will require a student to have a current physical exam on file with the LMS Health Office.
Health Clearance: A current physical exam (within the past 13 months) form must be on file in the health office prior to a student trying out or participating in a sport, and must remain current throughout the sport season.
Academic Clearance: A student is eligible to participate in Interscholastic Athletics if they meet the academic criteria of maintaining grades with no more than 2 failing grades (<59). Students who are ineligible are able to participate in “try-outs” for selected teams and can begin participation if they are eligible at the next marking point (see below). Students who are ineligible for non-selected or open teams are able to begin participation if they are eligible at the next marking point (see below).

Attendance Clearance: Student athletes must be in attendance for a minimum of one-half day (3 hours) to participate in games/practices.
Disciplinary Clearance:
Detention on a Game Day: If a student is assigned detention on the day of an athletic game, the detention must be completed before the student may participate in the game. A student who does not complete the assigned detention will not be permitted to participate in the game.
If a student is assigned detention on a game day, the student will be required to sit out for one-half of that day's game, even if the detention is completed. This consequence is intended to reinforce that athletic participation is a privilege and that disciplinary obligations take priority over participation.
In-School and Out-of-School Suspension: If a student receives an In-School Suspension (ISS) or Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) during the week of an athletic game, the student will be required to sit out the next scheduled game following the suspension.
If the suspension occurs on a day when a game is scheduled, the student will not participate in that game and will also sit out the next scheduled game.
The same athletic participation consequence applies to both ISS and OSS. A student may return to athletic participation following the required game suspension, provided the student has completed the suspension and is otherwise eligible to participate.
Multiple Disciplinary Incidents During a Season: Students who accumulate multiple disciplinary consequences during an athletic season may lose their eligibility to participate for the remainder of the season.
A student who receives three (3) or more ISS or OSS assignments during the season will be considered ineligible for the remainder of that athletic season.
Alternatively, the school may establish a cumulative detention threshold. A student who accumulates five (5) detentions during the athletic season will be considered ineligible for the remainder of the season and this will be determined by the administration, counselors, and coaches.
These consequences are intended to provide clear and consistent expectations regarding student attendance, academics, behavior and athletic participation. Participation in athletics is a privilege, and students are expected to maintain appropriate behavior and meet school disciplinary expectations in order to remain eligible.
