FAQ

What is Google Classroom?

Teachers in DBL8 use Google Classroom as a blended learning platform that aims to simplify creating, distributing and grading assignments in a paperless way. Teachers use it in different ways - to post daily agendas and lessons, while others simply post assignments. The strength of Google Classroom is that it gives teachers, students and parents a way of communicating beyond the classroom.

How do I get on to see what my child is doing in the classroom?

In order for parents to see how and what their child is doing on Google Classroom, it is imperative that when students first set up their accounts on Google Classroom, they share their passwords with parents so that parents always have access to what is happening in the classroom. We call this a "family password" and students will be strongly encouraged to share this at home with parents.

Do I have to buy a Chromebook for my child?

If possible, it is nice for students to have access to their own device in class everyday - we use them a lot! There is a limited supply of Chromebooks available to borrow in each classroom.

Why is my son/daughter with the same kids all day long in their "pod"?

One of our main goals for grade 8 students is to provide them with a positive experience as they transition to high school. We recognize that they are mature enough to have more freedoms and privileges, yet many get lost in the fast paced nature of such a large high school. By grouping students in a pod for their classes, students have the support of a core group of students as they travel throughout their day. This podding also helps teachers to work together more efficiently to support students' individual needs. The students' fourth class is their elective block. It gives students an opportunity to interact with students from other pods.

What if my student is going to be absent?

The school would appreciate a note or email from parents to excuse these absences. Please contact the office, by phone or email and the office staff will ensure that the absence is listed as excused and recorded appropriately on their record. Please call the school at 250-756-4595.

My daughter is going to miss a day of school. Will he or she be responsible for the work missed? What can be done so she or he doesn't fall behind?

Students are expected to complete all work missed regardless of illness, sport commitments, etc. When absent, students can consult Google Classroom or their pod mates to find out what they missed, and to ensure they don't fall behind or miss due dates. The student should also consult with their teacher (preferably prior to missing) to make alternate arrangements, if necessary.

We're going on a family vacation for a week. Can you put together a package for what my child will miss?

Students are encouraged to check and follow up on classroom activities and assignments on Google Classroom. Most assignments can be submitted electronically online via Google Classroom as well.

Here is an excerpt from the Dover Bay Student Handbook:

  • The staff at Dover Bay do not endorse vacations taken during school time. In order to maintain instructional time as our highest priority, we strongly encourage parents/guardians to schedule non-school related activities during non-instructional time.

  • A significant amount of the material covered in class, while a student is away, may be lost forever. Many special activities involving field trips, guest speakers, discussions, experiments, etc. cannot be replicated. Parents/guardians who choose to have their son/daughter absent from school for an extended period of time must realize that their child's grades may suffer due to missing class activities that cannot be reproduced.

  • Parents/guardians who decide to go on a vacation or trip during school time must notify teachers and school office. The longer the time away from school, the more course curriculum they miss.
