Objective:
The goal is to build a functional catapult that can launch a ping pong ball as far and as accurately as possible
Acceptable Materials:
Teams are limited to the following materials to build their catapult. These materials can be sourced from home:
Wooden craft sticks (Popsicle sticks)
Rubber bands
Plastic or wooden spoons
Glue (hot glue or white glue)
String or twine
Binder clips or paper clips
Small cardboard pieces (maximum size: 30 cm x 30 cm)
Plastic straws
Tape (masking or duct tape)
Small plastic cups or bottle caps
Elastic bands
Note: No pre-assembled kits, motors, or commercially made parts are allowed. Everything must be constructed from scratch using the materials listed above.
Functionality:
Manual Operation: The catapult must be powered by manual force or tension (e.g., rubber bands, twisted string, or lever mechanisms). No mechanical or electrical components are allowed.
Firing Mechanism: The catapult must have a trigger or simple launching mechanism (i.e., it cannot be launched simply by hand or manually pulling the arm down; a mechanism must release the energy).
Testing Criteria:
Teams will be awarded points in the following categories:
Distance: The catapult must launch a ping pong ball as far as possible. The distance will be measured from the launch point to where the ball lands (first impact).
Accuracy: A pyramid of red cups will be placed at a set distance (at least 1 meter). Teams earn points based on how many cups they knock over. Three trials will be allowed.
Creativity & Design: Teams will also be judged on the creativity and ingenuity of their design. Points can be awarded for aesthetics, structural integrity, and innovative solutions.
Scoring:
CREW classes can earn points in the following categories:
Distance: Points will be awarded based on the distance the projectile travels.
1st place: 500 points
2nd place: 300 points
3rd place: 200 points
4th place: 100 points
Accuracy: Points will be awarded based on how many cups you knock over.
5-6 cups over - 500 points
3-4 cups over - 300 points
1-2 cups over - 200 points.
Creativity & Design: A panel of judges will evaluate the catapult design for creativity and functionality.
1st place: 500 points
2nd place: 300 points
3rd place: 200 points
4th place: 100 points
