With British Columbia's redesigned curriculum, educators around the province have been tasked to blend westernized pedagogies with Indigenous pedagogies. Many or most teachers are underprepared for the new requirements that have been implemented through the Truth and Reconciliation act.

As this new curriculum allows educators to have autonomy in how they communicate a subject’s big ideas, content, and core competencies, some educators are lacking in knowledge when it comes to interweaving Indigenous and Westernized modes of learning.

Authentic Syilx educational resources and lessons might not be readily available or accessible, making it difficult for many educators. Connections with Indigenous advocates, community members, or knowledge keepers need to be made to access local resources, as learning happens with and from our local Indigenous community members. Through this resource, I hope to promote the integration of Syilx Okanagan knowledge into primary classrooms by providing teachers with access to all of the resources I have come across throughout my educational journey.

Though my intentions are to continue to learn about the land that I am on and to share this knowledge with other educators and students alike, I recognize that I am a visitor on the Unceded Territory of the Syilx Okanagan Peoples, and I am no expert in this knowledge.

This website is a work in progress and if there are any mistakes or inaccuracies please allow me to correct them. Reconciliation in education must be “an individual undertaking influenced by both personal experience and professional supports,” (Osmond & Turner 2020) and educators have to want to change their practice for the better, not because it has been required by the Truth and Reconciliation Act.

It is my understanding that what educators need to be successful in reconciliation, is support from their leaders, connections with Indigenous community members, and resources to draw from when integrating Indigenous pedagogies into their classrooms.

This website is designed for primary school educators who are teaching in the Syilx Okanagan territory looking for local resources, materials, field trips, lesson plans, and activities to use in their classrooms when integrating Indigenous knowledge and content.
Why did I create this resource?
Why did I create this resource?
I have designed this website because I recognized a gap in the resources available to primary school educators who are teaching Indigenous ways of knowing and perspectives. Despite the fact that Indigenous education is an important part of the British Columbia's curriculum, many resources are currently in the process of being created, and not yet available to support educators in this area. Though the local school districts in Vernon and Kelowna provide educators with information and resources, many of these resources are geared towards older adolescents or lack in context and usability in the classroom. I wanted to provide educators with local, culturally relevant resources that they can use to teach Indigenous knowledge in the early years of elementary school in a meaningful and respectful way. To enhance the learning experience for each of the resources provided on this website, it is important to collaborate with the Indigenous advocates at your school. This will allow the students to gain a more authentic and profound understanding of the resources available.
