The djembe or jembe originated in West Africa and is a rope-tuned, skin-covered, goblet drum played with bare hands. According to the Bambara people in Mali, the name of the djembe comes from the saying "Anke djé, anke bé". The Djembe is a loud drum that carried across the land and was often used to announce the arrival of visiting royalty or important travellers. Djembe translates to "everyone gather together in peace" and its name defines the drum's purpose.
The fanga was used by traveling tribes when entering a new village. When a visiting tribe was approaching a village they would sing Fanga-Alafiya to let the villagers know that they come in peace. If the villagers welcome them, they reply: Ashe-Ashe. Then, the travellers and villagers reverse the lines.
Fanga is a fun chant that captures meaning of peace, friendship and hospitality. In singing the fanga, there needs to be a Caller and a Responder. The lyrics are simple but fun.
The fanga song allowed tribes that spoke different languages to communicate. Music is a true universal language.
