Homework is assigned on a nightly basis. Homework is designed to reinforce the concepts that are taught in class. We strongly feel that parental involvement in homework is beneficial to students. We don't want you to do your child's homework, however, we do feel it is okay to help your child when he/she is struggling with a concept or assignment. Feel free to write us a note letting us know when this happens! We want to know!
It must be completed in pencil.
All work must be shown to receive full credit. "NO WORK, NO CREDIT!"
Homework and Classwork together accounts for 30% of your child's grade.
Children can not expect to do well if he/she is not completing his/her classwork and homework well on a daily basis. Practicing concepts through homework is imperative for success!
In 6th grade math, we are constantly spiraling! That means that students are not allowed to forget what they have already learned! It is important to keep notes, old tests/quizzes and spiral review books in a safe place at home to help review past concepts on a regular basis. Each test and quiz that is given throughout the school year will have about five questions from prior units of study, including previous grades.
For most assessments we will give the opportunity for students to earn back 20% of the points lost.
A video tutorial will be provided going over the assessment along with a correction/reflection sheet. This MUST be completed ACCURATELY along with a parent signature and turned in by the due date to earn the additional points.
How it works:
If a student earns an 80% on a test, that means he/she lost 20 points. 20% of 20 points equals 4. So the student can earn 4 points back changing the grade to an 84%. When viewing the grade in portal the grade will be written as 80+4; the original grade is 80% + 4 points for the corrections/reflections/parent signature.
If a student gets a 90%, that means he/she lost 10 points. 20% of 10 points equals 2 points, so the grade would become 92% (90 +2 in the portal).
Rationale -
Quite often in middle school we hear students say “I can’t do math.” or “ I hate math.” Our goal as math teachers is to get students to change that attitude and realize that they can "do math" by instilling a growth mindset. A growth mindset develops and grows when given opportunities to reflect and grow from our experiences. In the past, when we returned graded assessments to students the focus would be on the grade. If students were happy with the grade they might look it over and reflect, however we have consistently noticed over the years that students who were unhappy with a grade would hide the test away in their folder/locker/backpack/garbage and not want to look at it again often hiding it from their parents. This opportunity encourages students to review and reflect while earning some points back.
"How Can I Help My Child Study Math?"
"PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!" The more a child can practice the better.
Practice the math problems from class at home.
Practice five different problems a day from previous units.
Frequently review old tests/quizzes, notes, take home quizzes, spiral review books, etc
Review the video tutorials on this web site and the PowerPoint tutorials as well.
How Do We Calculate Your Child's Grade?
Classwork and Homework together are worth 30%
Assessments are worth 70%.
Assessments include tests, quizzes, take home quizzes and projects. Tests count twice as much as quizzes.
PLEASE...it is so important to check the portal on a weekly basis WITH YOUR child.
