Scientists use classification systems to help them work with the millions of compounds that have been discovered or synthesized. A very useful way to classify compounds is by their physical and chemical properties.
Physical properties describe the physical appearance and composition of a substance.
Chemical properties describe the reactivity of a substance. For example when calcium reacts vigorously when placed in water.
