Explore the Poetry In Voice website. Peruse the poems in the senior online anthology; read a variety of poems and find information about their authors. Select at least three poems from the anthology that speak to you, challenge you, even confuse you--just as long as they snag your interest in some way. Print off and bring at least one of these three poems to the "Poetry" seminar. This should be a poem you would like to memorize and recite. (If you have participated in Poetry In Voice in past years, this should not be the same poem you did then).

Have you ever felt confused about the meaning of poetry? Try some or all of the strategies listed below to enhance your level of comprehension. After all, you might discover that you enjoy reading poetry!
Read a poem frequently and aloud: Each reading will reveal additional meaning to you.
Use a dictionary: Look up any unfamiliar words or determine how some words can be used in unusual ways.
Consider the voice of the poem: Who is the persona?
Determine what happens in the poem: Look for shifts between the beginning, the middle, and the end. Are there shifts from youth to old age, concrete to abstract, or specific to philosophical?
Look for imagery that appeals to the senses: What does the poet want you to see, hear, feel, taste, touch, and/or smell? How are these goals achieved?
Discover the theme(s): Consider the title, the last two lines, or the final stanza of a poem to gain a deeper understanding of relevant themes.
