As you have seen so far in this unit, many different people have conflicting visions of what society should look like. This can challenge some of the key values of liberal ideology, especially modern and contemporary interpretations of it. As you go through this page, consider what specific values of liberalism are being challenged by these various groups in society, and how.
Indigenous worldviews of collective interest and interdependence continue to challenge liberalism in Canada to this day. Read pages 246-254 of your textbook to gain a better understanding of modern day land claims and the desire for self-government among First Nations, Metis and Inuit. How does this represent the pull between Canadian interpretations of property and governance versus Indigenous beliefs and values?
Relgious beliefs often also present unique challenges to various aspects of liberal ideology. Complete the chart below to learn more.
Alternatively, there are also instances where provincial governments have acted to restrict certain religious beliefs or practices. A perfect example is Quebec's Bill 21. This bans the wearing of any form of religious apparel in a public space in the name of protecting Quebec's secular society. This can be seen as a violation of freedom of religion, and the constitutionality of the law has been challenged.
Most environmentalists stress the negative impacts of capitalism and unrestricted consumption on the environment. They advocate for such measures as carbon taxes, government regulation of natural resources, encouraging less consumption, and regulation requiring manufactorers to collect their products from consumers when they are no longer useful. However, this would limit economic freedom and place collective interest ahead of self-interest and the profit motive. Should government be allowed to do this?
Others would argue that the limits environmentalists want to place on carbon emissions and other polluting industries will have a negative impact on global progress. This progress is a direct result of the adoption of liberal values, such as economic freedom and competition. However, as the effects climate change and extreme weather continue to be felt around the world, is this level of progress still taking place?
The Internet and social media also present unique challenges to liberal ideology because they bring up the question of the extent to which people should have freedom of speech and expression. For example, should people be allowed to post content that shows others how to make weapons? What about content that advocates hatred against a specific group of people? There is also the issue of content that is generated by AI and posted to social media - to what extent are people aware that what they are viewing could be fake or misleading?
Extremism, on both the political left and right, is starting to pose a growing challenge to liberal ideology. This polarization is likely being helped by the rise of information bubbles and algorithms, that tend to show people only the type of information with which they agree. It has also led to people challenging democratic institutions and norms, such as the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
