While liberalism prizes personal freedom and equality of rights, liberal democratic nations can have a tendency to believe that all people everywhere should adopt this form of government. This is somewhat ironic because it goes against the main tenets of liberal ideology.
When Western, democratic countries try to force other groups or nations to become like them and adopt their form of governance, it is referred to as the imposition of liberalism. This should not be confused with illiberalism. This is when liberal, democratic countries act to restrict the rights and freedoms of their citizens, usually in times of crisis. Make sure you understand the difference!
This unit will examine two main issues. The first is the impact of the imposition of liberalism on Indigenous people in Canada. The second is how the imposition of liberalism has affected other groups and countries around the world.
