TOHS Textbook Checkout Policy

Each student is entitled to a textbook for each subject she/he/they take. A textbook is the assigned book that a class uses to study a subject. Core literature novels, workbooks, and other teacher assigned supplementary material checked out from the Lancer Library are also considered textbooks.

School policy requires a current student ID card* to check out materials from the Lancer Library. It is especially key when several classes are coming in to checkout textbooks as a class during finals or class time. Your student ID card helps to insure accuracy and efficiency in the checkout process.

As students, you are required to carry your cards at all times*. Please purchase a student ID card at the Student Store for $5 if yours has been lost. Then take the receipt to our receptionist in the main office to obtain your new card.

*The reverse side of the student ID card states: “This is your official school identification. You must carry it at all times and present upon request. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action. This card is non-transferable.

There are a few important things to keep in mind about textbooks. In no particular order, please remember the following...

When checking out anything (textbooks, library books) from the library with your I.D., you are ultimately responsible for these materials. If anything happens to the materials you checked out (damaged, stolen, lost, etc,), you are responsible for replacement or payment. Do not, for example, lend books to other students, leave books unattended, or leave materials in your classroom.

When textbooks are initially checked out, please check for damages that may include missing barcodes, missing pages, writing in book, cover damage, and water damage. Please report damages that you find within the first two weeks of checkout to the library staff so they can make a note on your book. Normal wear is expected.

Please cover your textbooks. Because the textbooks must be used for many years to come, please take the time to protect them from daily wear. Fabric covers or paper covers are best; please do not use sticky adhesive covers. These often damage the book and you will be charged for any damage.

Record your barcode numbers in a safe place (ex: take a photo on your phone) in order to keep track of your books throughout the year. Make sure it is the SCHOOL barcode, not the manufacturer barcode. Books can get mixed up and you want to make sure that you return the books that you checked out in the beginning of the school year.

If you damage a textbook or lose and are not able to find a textbook, stop by the library to find out the cost of the book and then bring in either a check (made out to TOHS) or cash and you will be issued a new book. If you find your lost book, within the current school year, you will be issued a refund check less a processing fee. Bring the lost book to the library and we will begin the process for the refund. After paperwork is complete at TOHS, refund requests must be processed at the district office and should be received within 90 days. A refund check will be mailed to you. We cannot issue refunds for replacement copies provided by the students.

The library staff at TOHS, which consists of a teacher librarian and a library technician, are responsible for all textbook distribution, inventory, damages, and bookkeeping (along with all the other library responsibilities!), so your patience and cooperation is much appreciated.
