Essentials

The AVID Essentials

At the core of the AVID program are three essentials: the binder, tutorials, and the Focused Note-Taking Process. These three pillars support student success in a variety of ways, each incorporating various WICOR strategies. The repetition of these key elements throughout the program allows students to master the skills, eventually making these strategies their own as they carry them into their colleges, careers, and lives in unique ways.

The Binder

AVID students are highly encouraged to keep all of the materials for all of their courses in a single, 2-3" three-ring binder. Students will learn to organize their materials for each course as well as maintenance strategies to keep things neat throughout the year.

Students can choose alternative organizational methods, such as folder, notebooks, and backpacks if they prefer. Regardless of the organizational system employed, AVID students are expected to have all necessary materials for each class and to be able to easily find notes and assignments.

Tutorials

AVID Tutorials are not like traditional tutoring. A tutorial is not intended to be the fastest way to arrive at the correct answer. Rather, the tutorial process guides students in learning how to help themselves by developing presentation skills, questioning skills, organizational skills, and personal reflection. It can be a frustrating process for presenters, group members, and instructors; but the "Ah-Ha!" moments are invaluable! Growth is a struggle, and it is through the struggle of the tutorial process that independent learners are created.

Focused Note-Taking Process

The Focused Note-Taking Process, or FNT, is really a study method more than a note-taking approach. Taking notes is only the first step. This process teaches students to revisit their notes several times over the next week to aid comprehension and retention of the information. When students embrace the FNT process, there is no need to cram the night before the test. Students will work through the material in a natural way, so that they truly understand it and make the learning their own.
