What is American Sign Language (ASL)?
American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, natural language with its own grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. It is not simply English translated into signs. ASL is the primary language of many members of the Deaf community.
Do students need any prior experience with ASL?
No! ASL I is designed for beginners. Students will learn everything they need throughout the course.
Is ASL considered a foreign/world language?
Yes! American Sign Language fulfills the World Languages graduation requirement in Texas and is recognized by many colleges and universities.
Why should students take ASL?
Learning ASL helps students:
Develop communication skills
Learn more about Deaf culture
Increase cultural awareness
Build confidence in public communication
Prepare for careers in education, healthcare, interpreting, public safety, and more.
Is ASL the same around the world?
No. Just like spoken languages, many countries have their own sign language. For example, American Sign Language and British Sign Language are different languages.
Is sign language universal?
No. There are hundreds of sign languages used around the world!
Why do students learn about Deaf culture?
ASL is more than a language - it is closely connected to the history, traditions, and values of the Deaf community. Understanding Deaf culture helps students become respectful and effective communicators.
What should students bring to class?
Students should bring:
Their charged laptop (and their charger just in case)
A writing utensil
Any required classroom materials
A positive attitude and willingness to participate
Will students be signing everyday?
Yes!! ASL is best learned through consistent practice. Students will participate in expressive and receptive activities during nearly every class.
Why are students expected to sign instead of talk?
Using ASL without speaking helps student develop visual communication skills and learn the language more naturally. Voice-off activities encourage students to think in ASL rather than translating from English.
Why are facial expressions important?
Facial expressions, called Non-Manual Markers/Morphemes (NMMs), are part of ASL grammar. They communicate questions, emotions, emphasis, and other grammatical information.
Why do students perform signing assignments?
ASL is a visual language. Students demonstrate learning by communicating through conversations, presentations, stories, and expressive signing rather than relying only on written tests.
