Small group counseling from a school counselor is short-term and meant to address immediate needs of concern for students including during times of change/transition, heightened stress, crisis, or other situations impeding student success. We cover social-emotional skills in the areas of self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills, social awareness, and responsible decision-making.
Individual counseling from a school counselor is short-term and solution-focused. We do not provide traditional therapy, but we focus on helping students gain the awareness and skills necessary to seek problem-solving solutions. We help students with friendship problems, setting goals, working collaboratively with others, adjusting to a new school, managing their feelings, and learning how to make responsible decisions.
The Leander ISD Student and Family Support Team (SFST) comprises Licensed Clinical Social Workers and Licensed Professional Counselors who provide short-term therapy services to students. The SFST team serves students and families who struggle with issues that significantly impact student learning and serves as a link between school, home, and the community. Team members promote and support wellness, healthy choices, and a drug-free lifestyle through prevention education and short-term individual or group counseling services. These services are only provided with parental consent and the referrals must be made through the school counselor. If a student needs long-term traditional therapy, the SFST team will provide referrals to community resources.
