This engaging unit introduces second-grade students to foundational theatre skills through hands-on exploration of costumes, stage directions, scenery, props, and puppetry. Beginning with simple costume creation and learning basic stage directions, students develop spatial awareness and character expression on stage. They then move into designing and using scenery and props to enrich dramatic play, fostering creativity and storytelling skills. The unit culminates with a puppet play of The 3 Billy Goats Gruff, where students collaborate to create puppets and scenery, rehearse, and perform while practicing respectful audience etiquette. Throughout, movement activities spark imagination and physical expression, while discussions and reflections deepen understanding of how visual and physical elements enhance storytelling. Aligned with Texas Theatre TEKS, this unit nurtures collaboration, expressive voice and movement, and audience awareness, making theatre accessible, fun, and meaningful for young learners.
