Intro to Tech Theate and Advanced Theatre are YEAR-LONG classes.
Advanced Theatre is a class that is offered to 7th and 8th graders who have demonstrated advanced knowledge and dedication to theatre arts. Auditions for this class are created through a portfolio of work in Introductory Theatre or Theatre I. Students in this class are expected to audition for high school theatre, perform at an advanced level, work collaboratively, produce their own shows and participate in extracurricular theatre.
Advanced Theatre typically participates in the following field trips:
Traveling Play
This field trip is typically two separate days in February. We tour a show to all four elementary schools that feed into Running brushy.
Renaissance Festival
An optional Saturday in the spring semester where we get to take students to Sherwood Forest Faire.
Due to the amount of field trips, advanced theatre students are held to a much higher behavior standard.
Advanced theatre students pair up with the creative writing class to produce new plays. Creative writing students write the script and advanced theatre students direct, design and star in the productions.
A major attraction to this class has always been the class play. The class will elect to choose a published play or write their own. They will apply to be directors, hold their own auditions, and independently produce their own production to tour at each of the elementary schools that feed into RBMS.
In the beginning of the course, students will build relationships through improvisational activities, scenes and games. They will then graduate to devised theatre, creating group scenes with guided prompts.
Students in advanced theatre get to choose their design project. In the past, we have built tree stumps, rocks, sewing, and old-age makeup design. The class will vote on a project, read the play connected to that project, design, and build.
Students will create live musical theatre performances. Students are graded on movement and vocals. (Lip-syncing is allowed, but we will go into detail in class.)
Intro to Technical Theatre is a new class to the RBMS catalogue. The students last year piloted the first course. The class is designed to give students hands-on experience in every area of technical theatre.
Students will...
-Understand the design process
-Learn and implement the elements and principles of design.
-Get hands-on experience designing and building in the areas of Makeup, Lighting, Sound, Scenic, Props, Projection, Costumes and more!
We had a lot of fun last year and I would love to thank all of the students who were patient and helped to pilot and refine the curriculum.
