We ask students to be kind, stay engaged, and work hard. Students are responsible for checking Google Classroom and their grades regularly and communicating with their teacher when they need help.
Come Prepared Every Day
Students should bring these three things to ELA every day:
A book they are currently reading
ELA folder
Pencil
Charged laptop and charger
They will also keep a composition notebook in the classroom.
Homework
Students are expected to read for 20–30 minutes outside of class each day. They should choose a book they are interested in and actively work toward finishing it. Reading is an important part of our ELA instruction and will be used regularly in class!
There will also be times that students will need to complete missing or incomplete ELA work at home.
How Grades Work
Our gradebook is based on 99% Skill Mastery and 1% Practice. Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery of essential ELA skills throughout each unit.
4 (100) – Advanced: Above grade-level mastery
3 (90) – Mastery: Grade-level mastery
2 (70) – Developing: Beginning to demonstrate the skill independently
1 (60) – Emerging: Needs significant support
0 – No Evidence: Incomplete, missing for more than 3 days, or not attempted
Missing & Make-Up Work
Assignments may be submitted up to 3 days late.
Work is marked Missing (M) until it is turned in. While missing, the M placeholder is calculated as a 0 in the gradebook. Once the work is submitted, the M will be replaced with the earned grade. If the work is not submitted within the late-work window, it will remain a 0.
Students who are absent for an excused absence should check Google Classroom and email their teacher. They have one day to make up work for each day absent.
Academic Dishonesty
Copying, plagiarism, cheating, or unauthorized use of AI is not permitted. Students are expected to complete their own work so that grades accurately reflect their learning and growth. Academic dishonesty will be addressed regularly in class and will result in parent contact and appropriate consequences.
Tutorial Attendance
Students who have missed instruction and/or assignments due to absences, need additional practice, or would like another opportunity to demonstrate mastery are encouraged to attend Power Hour tutorials.
