A Chapter of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society

Dear Prospective Member:

RHO KAPPA Social Studies Honor Society is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies. The mission and purpose of this organization is to promote scholarship and to recognize academic excellence in social studies in secondary school environments and the community, to provide through its local chapters opportunities for exploration in the social studies in secondary school environments and the community, and to encourage interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the social studies.

RHO KAPPA is comprised of chapters. Each chapter is led by student officers who work with the chapter sponsor; together they determine and induct new society members, as well as plan chapter meetings and activities that engage their memberships. Each chapter determines the activities that are appropriate for their own chapter. All chapters register members with the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) National office, and all agree to abide by the national RHO KAPPA Social Studies Honor Society Constitution.

Before submitting your application, please review the requirements for membership below to ensure that you are eligible. If you are not currently eligible, we encourage you to continue to strive to achieve eligibility.

Leander Rho Kappa Constitution’s eligibility requirements for new applicants:

Section I: In order to apply to be a member of Leander RHO KAPPA, students must meet the following criteria:

a) Must have successfully completed two Advanced Placement Social Studies courses;

b) Must be on pace to successfully complete a minimum of four Advanced Social Studies Courses (AP/IB) by graduation. Preferential consideration will be given to students planning to complete five AP/IB Courses. *Single semester courses such as AP Government count as 1 course;

c) Have an 85 average or better in all completed AP/IB Social Studies courses, and a 95 or better average in completed on-level social studies courses;

d) Must have no incidents of academic dishonesty;

e) Must have no failed Austin Community College (ACC) Social Studies classes (please note that ACC courses do not count towards the requirements listed above in b);

f) Must have an overall GPA of 4.5 or better;

g) Must have a complete application meeting all application requirements .


All prospective applicants should keep their schedule clear for the evening of Wednesday, May 30th. This is the date upon which all successful applicants will be inducted that evening at the Rho Kappa Induction Ceremony.

You will be notified of acceptance no later than: November 8th

RUNNING FOR OFFICER POSITIONS:

All applicants interested in running for an officer position, must declare their intention to run no later than noon on November 15th.

Declared candidates for officer positions will need to attend an interview with Mrs. Johnson-Petrinec as part of the application process. Interviews for prospective officers will be held before & after school on Monday, May __st, and before school May __nd. Our final meeting of the year will be May __nd & __rd.

Officer candidates should plan to give a short speech explaining their reasons & goals for the Honor Society, and so should plan to attend both meetings. (Two meeting times are scheduled for each meeting to accommodate members' schedules.)

Winning candidates will be announced via this website on May t__h & should plan to meet during PRIDE on May __th to help with Induction and begin planning for the year.
