99% Skills Mastery
1% Practice
It takes time for students to practice and get good at a skill. Think about when you first learned to ride a bike, played a sport, or drove a car. Chances are you were not “proficient” on your first try. More than likely, you had to practice, study, and ask for help. Over time, however, your skill improved. Mathematics is no different. Students need time and practice to achieve proficiency with math skills.
Our System to Demonstrate Achievement in Mathematics
For each grading cycle, we have determined the Essential Outcomes (EO) which students are expected to master in the unit. For each EO, teachers have defined levels of student achievement:
No Evidence (50): Student is not completing questions on their exit tickets. Therefore, there is no evidence to show what level the student is at.
Emerging (60): Student is completing questions on their exit ticket but, has not acieved the minimum standard and is failing the skill.
Developing (70): The basic level or the minimum standard needed to earn a “passing grade” on this skill.
Mastery (90): The level we want all students to attain to be successful in future units or math courses.
Advanced (100): The highest level of math attainment expected on this skill.
99% of their grade = Essential Outcomes:
Students will be given a minimum of 3 opportunities in class to demonstrate achievement of each EO in the unit by successfully solving math problems created specifically for each level of math achievement on that skill (Developing, Mastery, and Advanced). These questions are their "Exit Ticket" and are completed at the end of class. Once a student has demonstrated the ability to successfully solve math problems 2 times in a row, at the same particular level and over a period of time, they are considered to have attained that level of achievement. If students do not reach the level they wish to be at by the 3rd attempt, they can come to tutorials during power hour to receive extra questions. Please note, students do not receive a grade until their 2nd attempt on an exit ticket and grades will not be inputted until the 3rd attempt.
1% of their grade = Weekly Spiral Review (WSR) & Practice during class:
Weekly spiral reviews will be assigned every Monday and are due the following Monday. Each WSR has about 10 questions that review past and current material we are learning class.

Below are examples of how students will self track what level of achievement they are at for a specific EO.
