Athletics is considered a full year course. Students either sign up for the class at the start of the school year or move into the period because they have made either the volleyball or basketball team.
Practices
The 7th grade volleyball and basketball team practices are usually before school and into the 1st period athletics class.
The 8th grade volleyball and basketball team practices mainly during 8th period athletics class and after school.
Girls that are in Athletics are required to participate in at least one of the school sponsored sports (i.e. Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, Track & Field, Soccer). For more information about individual sports please check out our other pages linked to this site, or for additional questions email emily.hanna@leanderisd.org.

The grade in Athletics is based on class effort/participation (75%) and uniform wear (25%). Effort/participation includes assignments, punctuality, following directions, sportsmanship, attitude, and behavior. Both effort/participation and uniform wear will be assessed on a daily basis, which will result in a weekly grade for each category.
Parent notes will not be accepted as a reason to miss practice. If an athlete is too ill or injured to practice then he/she must report to the Athletic Trainer or School Nurse at the Middle School or bring a written note from the doctor specifying the illness/injury and the number of days the athlete is to miss.
This comes directly from the Leander ISD Athlete Handbook.
An athlete in-season for any LISD sport shall not participate in club competition at the same time without the campus coordinator's approval. A LISD athletic event should not be missed for a club event. Consequences for missing a LISD athletic event may apply.

Lockers and an assigned combination lock will be provided to each athlete. Only the athlete and the coaches should know the combination to the assigned lock. It is the athlete’s responsibility to lock up her belongings during class time. Athletes can only bring items into the locker room that can be locked in their locker. We encourage the athletes to leave book bags and other large items either in the coaches office or in the front of the gym next to the coaches' desk. Athletes who do not show responsibility in the locker room, such as not locking up belongings or leaving clothes lying around, will conference with a coach. Each student must replace his or her assigned lock if it is lost.
The locker room is strictly a technology free area. Cell phones should not be seen out inside the locker room for any reason. The gym is also a technology free area. Computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices are not allowed in the gym without instruction by a coach. Technology devices seen by a coach in the locker room or gym will be confiscated and turned into the front office.
*This comes directly from the Leander ISD Athlete Handbook: Use of audio or visual recording devices, including a cell phone, are not permitted in changing areas, restrooms, showers or locker rooms. Violators may be reported to campus administration, law enforcement or other governmental authorities and could be subject to consequences, including suspension or removal from athletic program.
Items left out in the locker room will be picked up and taken to the school's lost and found location in the FPMS Cafeteria daily. If an athlete has an item that has been lost or stolen, she should immediately report the item(s) to a coach. Action will be taken to recover lost or stolen items.
If injured, athletes can see the trainers at Vandegrift High School during Middle School hour, which is Monday-Friday from 7:00-8:00 a.m. (no Fridays during Vandegrift football season). The Training Room is located in Building 2 at VHS.

Girls who are currently enrolled in Athletics in the 7th grade may sign up for Athletics again in the 8th grade as long as the student has met the requirement of participating in one school sponsored sport during her seventh grade year. Students who have not met this requirement must receive permission from Coach Hanna.
Girls who want to sign up for Athletics who are not currently in Athletics must go through the "Athletics Unit" in the spring for 2 weeks - A total of 10 lessons. If they complete the unit, they can sign up for athletics during their registration period.
Once in Athletics, girls who want to play volleyball or basketball must still tryout and make the teams. Students who make the team will practice their sport during the athletics period as well as before/after school. Those who do not make the team will take part in the conditioning program (Off Season) during the period only.
Students who do not complete the athletics unit will register for Lifetime Fitness, or another activity class during their registration period. Only those students who complete the "Athletics Unit" will be permitted to sign up for girls athletics.
If a student does not complete the Athletics Unit in the spring, signs up for Lifetime Fitness, and then chooses to tryout for volleyball and makes the team, she will receive a schedule change and be placed in the athletics period at that time and for the remainder of the school year. These students will still be required to complete the athletics unit as soon as a schedule change occurs. Since the student will be pulled from her practice to complete the unit, it is highly encouraged that any child interested in being in athletics complete the unit in the Spring.
