ALL reading in English I is aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills. Please confer with your student throughout the year about their self-selected reading titles.
TEKS - Developing and sustaining
foundational language skills: listening,
speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--
self-sustained reading. The student reads
grade-appropriate texts independently. The
student is expected to self-select text and
read independently for a sustained period of time.
Important Note: Some titles for independent reading or book clubs deal with mature and/or sensitive subject matter and/or have strong language. Parents and students should communicate about reading choices to know if a book is a “best fit.” Resources to review books include Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Common Sense Media, and Goodreads. In addition, students will choose their own topics for daily and published writings. Parents and students will want to communicate about the writing students are doing and publishing in class.
