GENERAL TREATMENT GUIDELINES

for Common Injuries

CONCUSSION/HIT TO THE HEAD

Immediate Care

1. REMOVE ATHLETE FROM ALL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

2. Monitor for any of the following symptoms after a hit to the head. If symptoms worsen, or if athlete "blacks out" seek immediate medical care.

            • Headache

            • Nausea

            • Light/noise Sensitivity

            • Dizziness

            • Balance Problems

            • Fatigue

            • Numbness/tingling

            • Ringing in ears

            • Just dont "feel right"

            • Change in mood (sadness, nervousness, more irritable)

            • Difficulty remembering/concentrating

3. Must go to doctor before participating in any workouts.

SPRAIN / STRAIN

Immediate Care

1. RICES - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and Support

a. Ice application for 20 minutes on the hour

2. NO HEAT for first 48 hours

3. Tape, wrap, and/or splint for support and/or pressure

4. Avoid unnecessary movement of injured part

5. Weight bearing and ambulation status dictated by severity of injury

6. Elevation with intermittent compression

TENONITIS / BURSITIS

Immediate Care

1. Rest from irritating activity

2. Compression / support for protection and comfort

3. Ice - bath with mild and gradual stretching

4. Taping / Wrapping as indicated

CONTUSION

Immediate Care

1. RICES - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and Support

a. Ice massage, and packs

b. Gradual, graded stretch following cold and pressure

c. Application continues until symptoms subside

d. Pressure wrapping when applies to injury

2. Avoid activity to injured area

FRACTURE

Immediate Care

1. RICES - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and Splint

2. In case of open fracture - stop bleeding by direct or indirect

pressure and apply sterile dressing to wound

3. Before transport - adequately splint the suspected fracture site above

and below injured area

4. OBTAIN MEDICAL ATTENTION AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE

SEPARATIONS AND DISLOCATIONS

Immediate Care

1. RICES - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, and Splint

2. Do not reduce injury

3. OBTAIN MEDICAL ATTENTION AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE
