College Prep English 9
Welcome to CP English 9!
This course is designed to prepare students with the reading, writing, research, and communication skills necessary for success at a four-year university or private college. Students enrolling in this course should have mastered basic competencies in reading, grammar, and written expression, and demonstrate the attitudes and work habits of a student preparing to go to college. (From the LHS Program of Studies)
We will be striving for EXCELLENCE. Be prepared to work and study hard. This course is designed to prepare you for college, so your attitude and work habits are expected to be similar to that of a college student.

Weekly Learning Plans will be posted here and on Google Classroom every week.

CP 9 Norms
Follow all school rules and classroom norms and procedures.
Be respectful. See "LHS Respectful Student Behaviors" on the Procedures page.
Use appropriate classroom behavior.
No talking or causing distractions when others are talking.
Be on time.
Be prepared (charged Chromebook, bell ringer notebook, paper & pencil, completed homework/reading).
Stay on task and participate.
Cell phones & earbuds/headphones IN YOUR BAG (see below for more specific policy).
Please stay seated until the bell rings. Do not line up at the door.
DO YOUR OWN WORK. Plagiarism (copying from the internet or another student) will not be tolerated and will result in an office referral and redo opportunity. This includes using AI in any way to complete your work.
Consequences include warnings, behavior meetings with Mrs. Henderson, phone calls home, parent-teacher meetings, and office referrals (last resort).
Bathroom/water fountain passes: Do not ask to go at the beginning (bell ringers) or end of class (review/wrap-up). Please try to wait until work time, but let me know if it's an emergency.
You are allowed to drink and eat in my classroom, but here are a few things to remember:
Quick Snack!
Don't be distracting (don't be noisy, no stinky food, don't share)
Your drink should have a lid
Clean up after yourself
Cell Phone & Music Policy
Cell phones and headphones/earbuds must be put away IN YOUR BAG at the beginning of class.
Please put your cell phone on SILENT (vibrating phones are distracting).
Please ask to listen to music.
Music YOU can hear is allowed, not music WE can hear. Start your music and begin working within 1 minute. Listening to music is a privilege that can be taken away.
Music is not allowed during quizzes/tests until everyone is finished.
Let me know if you have an emergency and need your phone out during class.
You will receive consequences for repeated cell phone & earbud/headphone misuse (home adult phone call/email, office referral).

Grading Policies
All grades will be entered into PowerSchool.
Formative assessments: These will NOT count for or against students, but I will enter some into PowerSchool. These include NoRedInk grammar assignments and other short assignments that help students learn/help me to see where they are.
Summative assessments: These show student achievement of the content standards. These include some bell ringers, tests, project, quizzes, and writing assignments.
Some types of assignments can be considered formative or summative, depending on when they are assigned. These include homework, bell ringers, discussions, and online tools assignments (FlipGrid, Padlet, and Newsela, for example).
Redos/Retakes:
I do not allow retakes on tests or quizzes (exception: you CAN redo a NoRedInk quiz if you completed the practice by the due date, which is right before the quiz).
I do not allow redos on minor assignments.
Please ask about redoing a project or essay. You will be assigned English Lab (required) and will have a final due date.
You will be required to redo an essay with a failing grade. You will be assigned English Lab (required) and will have a final due date.
You will only be allowed to redo an assignment if you turned it in by the final due date.
Late Work & Absences
School policy: “Make-up work will be completed in the number of days equal to the number of days the student was absent.”
Due dates will be communicated in class, on Google Classroom, and on the Weekly Learning Plan.
Graded work will be accepted within one week after the due date.
The final due date will be posted on the Weekly Learning Plan.
Occasionally I will not accept a late assignment or you will not have a full week, but I will communicate that with you in class, on Google Classroom, and on the Weekly Learning Plan. THIS SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR EVERY ASSIGNMENT.
There may be a delay in grading for late assignments due to current work needing graded.
If you are absent, check the Weekly Learning Plan. You should be working at home if you are able.
