The award winning Linkhorne Middle School bands are a part of Linkhorne Middle School and the Lynchburg City School System in Lynchburg, Virginia. Three bands based on grade levels 6, 7, and 8 make up the bulk of the program. Some members participate in the award winning E.C. Glass High School marching band program.
6th Grade Band - is where it all begins! Anyone is welcome to be a part of the band. The 6th grade band is divided into two classes. Woodwind choices include Flute, Clarinet and Saxophone. Brass choices include trumpet and trombone. Students wanting to play percussion will participate in an audition before being placed on percussion. Selection is based on rhythmic ability, commitment to practicing, and overall musicality. Students are allowed to try many different instruments before choosing what to play. We make recommendations for instruments to students based on the shape of their mouth, size of their hands and many other factors based on our experience that will lead them to a successful choice. Ultimately; students choose what to play. The focus is on the solid fundamentals of playing and developing reading skills along with great posture, embouchure, breath support, proper care and maintenance of their instrument, and ATTITUDE!
7th Grade Beginning Band - This class is for 7th graders who want to begin playing an instrument, but didn't sign up in 6th grade. The class runs very similarly to the 6th grade band class where we focus on basics and fundamentals. (See above for description) 7th Grade Intermediate Band - is a combined band with all instruments and students have the opportunity to explore some other instruments that help fill out the band such as baritone, tuba, tenor sax, bass clarinet, oboe and bassoon. Skills continue to develop and overall musicality and maturity grow as do the students. Advanced students are encouraged to prepare and try out for All District Band. This class will occasionally combine with 8th grade band due to instrumentation needs.
8th Grade Advanced Band - is a combined band class that prepares students for concerts, All-District Band tryouts, community field trips, our big Spring Trip to an Amusement Park and in general promotes great playing, musicality and attitude that leads to a lifelong love of music and performing. This class will occasionally combine with 7th grade band due to instrumentation needs.
