Course Description

Advanced Placement European history concentrates on the people, places, and events that make up Europe’s history from AD 1450 through the present day. The culture, economy, intellectual movements, diplomacy, and the social history of Europe will be studied in class. The material will help develop the understanding of contemporary institutions, the role of continuity and change in modern society and governments, and the growth and change of the various forms of artistic expression and intellectual movements. The period of the late Middle Ages through the Industrial Revolution will be studied during the first semester and during the second semester the historical periods beginning with the late Industrial Revolution through the present day will be examined. Along with the historical periods, many English skills will be studied and used in class. The AP European history class is a college – level survey course and the higher order thinking skills are required. The recognition of themes in European history along with analyzing historical evidence, historical interpretation, and the ability to express historical understanding in writing is needed in the class.
