Commonly Asked Questions from Parents/Guardians
Q: How can I check my child's grade?
You can check your student's grades through PowerSchool! Here is a quick link to the Parent PowerSchool Login. I try to get all grades in the gradebook within 1 week of being turned in. If you have any questions regarding grades, please do not hesitate to reach out. 😊
Q: How can I contribute to the classroom?
This is my favorite question! 😍 We are beyond blessed at ILMS to receive so much support from our administration, PTO, and local community. However, there are some materials that are always appreciated.
Tissues (especially in the winter and spring months)
Disinfecting Wipes
Paper Towels (for all the many, many water bottle spills)
Peanut -Free Candy (as a part of our reward system for review activities and awesome behavior)
Q: Can my student earn extra credit?
Oh yes! Each quarter students have the option to complete a Book Challenge! The Book Challenge is worth a 100 quiz grade and can be submitted on Google Classroom. The extra credit is applied at the end of each quarter.
Book Challenge Requirements:
The student must read a chapter book more than 200 pages outside of class and write an original 1 paragraph summary on it (5 sentences). For further details, please refer to the instructions on Google Classroom.
Q: How do I get my child into English 1 in 8th Grade?
This is done through the Guidance Department. If you would like to have your child take English 1 in 8th grade, please email their assigned guidance counselor. (They create the schedules and assign your student's classes.) Students are strongly encouraged to switch to Pre-AP within the first few weeks of the school year if they are intrested in the more advanced course.
PLEASE NOTE: I teach standard 7th grade ELA and English 1 is a 9th grade class. Students in English 1 will be expected to know 8th grade material (which is not part of the seventh grade curriculum and therefore not taught in my class). If you would like your student to take English 1 in 8th grade, I strongly recommend switching into a Pre-AP course this year. Pre-AP courses are more rigorous and will best prepare students who wish to take on the high school material in English 1 next year.
Please email your student's assigned Guidance Counselor if you would like to have your student moved to a Pre-AP course. The link is above in blue.
Q: When are parent-teacher conferences?
We have three scheduled evenings to meet with teachers throughout the year:
1 "Meet the Teacher" evening in the beginning of the year
2 Parent-Teacher conference nights.
Everyone is encouraged to attend the "Meet the Teacher" night in the fall. (The date will be announced by the administration.)
The two parent-teacher conferences are designated for students who are failing, at risk of failing, or exhibiting concerning behaviors. Due to time constraints, we are unable to meet with all families during these evenings. (For example, I have approximately 100 students and only 3 hours of availability during the designated Parent-Teacher Conference night.) Teachers will send email invitations to the families of students who qualify for a conference. If you do not receive an invitation, it means your student's teachers do not have any significant concerns about their performance at this time.
That being said, I would be more than happy to set up a conference at any point in the year! Please email me directly at mary.giavedoni@lcsd.k12.sc.us to request a meeting.
