On Wednesday, Feb. 22, Buford FFA traveled with Lancaster FFA to Columbia, SC to participate in Legislative Day! Buford had 19 members in attendance and both Ag Advisors. As student’s arrived on Capitol grounds, the Buford Chapter joined around 500 other FFA members from across the state on the South Carolina State House steps.
Members were greeted by South Carolina FFA President, Drake Ariail. After a brief introduction, Ariail introduced the South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture, Hugh Weathers. Commissioner Weathers relayed his personal experiences in agriculture growing up on his family farm and what he is doing to advance the agriculture industry and maintain its relevance in our state. At the conclusion of this speech, Buford FFA members listened in on the House floor to the discussion being made by our Representatives, as well as the motion and amendments being made to active legislation.
Buford FFA members quickly recognized that our Representatives were using parliamentary procedure, a system that is used often during FFA meetings to conduct business. Before leaving the Capitol grounds, our FFA members got the chance to speak with the Representatives that represent our County and School District, Representative Richie Yow and Representative Cody Mitchell. Members briefly explained the work our Chapter conducts, the animals we have on campus, and the many facilities our students get the chance to learn across our department!
Legislative Day was an awarding experience for all those who attended and gave students the opportunity to see how our Capital operates for our state!
