Our math professional development supports the use of the CRA (Concrete–Representational–Abstract) model to build deep, conceptual understanding at every grade level. In line with recent legislation, we’re committed to using evidence-based, high-quality instructional materials that support all learners. This page offers resources and training to help you implement effective, hands-on math instruction that meets the needs of all students.

STEMscopes Math embraces the Concrete–Representational–Abstract (CRA) model, rooted in constructivist learning, to build deep conceptual understanding and foster student discourse. The platform uses the 5E + IA lesson cycle—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate, plus tailored Intervention & Acceleration—to support meaningful math experiences for all learners.
On the Scopes Page, you will find videos showing you how to find and implement each part of the curriculum. In addition, Set-up Videos, Instructional Strategies, and Language Strategies are embedded within every Explore activity of a scope.
Mathspace brings the Concrete–Representational–Abstract (CRA) teaching approach to life through its adaptive platform—supporting student understanding by bridging manipulatives, visual models, and symbolic reasoning. With StepSmart technology, Mathspace delivers step-by-step feedback while students work, helping them make purposeful transitions through each CRA stage. In addition, Mathspace offers asynchronous training resources outlined below:
Built-in PD modules: Access on-demand webinars and recordings (like “Ensuring Student Learning”) that spotlight integrating tech and CRA-based instructional strategies.
Rich resource hub: Explore interactive textbooks, investigative simulations, and collaborative tasks aligned with best practices—your one-stop toolbox for thoughtful lesson planning.

Comprehensive Instructional Program (CIP):
The CIP is a consortium of public school divisions in Virginia working collaboratively to improve student achievement as measured by Virginia's Standards of Learning assessments. The CIP is designed to help instructors by providing pacing guides, activities, and assessments that are highly aligned to Virginia's Curriculum Frameworks in content and rigor. These resources have been submitted by teachers who have demonstrated superior performance as evidenced by their students' scores on Virginia's SOL assessments. The CIP also analyzes data across the consortium to identify successful schools and divisions and share their practices with other consortium members.
