Competitive debate offers many opportunities for you to develop a deep understanding of some of the most important social, economic, political, and ethical issues relevant in the world today and to learn how to develop and defend arguments supporting different points of view on those issues. You will learn many valuable skills that will help you in your academic and professional life, including the following:
the ability to analyze both sides of complex issues
logic, reasoning, and critical thinking skills
research, writing, and public speaking skills
the ability to craft strong arguments with evidence and articulate your position clearly and forcefully.
No previous experience is required, and you will be matched with a peer mentor to help you learn.
This is a great way to make new friends and travel to cool places.
Finally, doing debate in high school looks great on college applications! Even if you don’t plan on participating in debate in college, participation in debate helps you develop the intellectual skills to be successful in college. Some of our former debaters have gone on to Columbia University, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Northwestern University.
