College fairs is a great way to learn about a lot of colleges in a very short period of time. You generally do not have to register to attend but pre-registering can help you in several ways.

1. You may be allowed in earlier if you pre-register

2. You do not need to spend time filling out your contact information at every booth. 

Providing your contact info will not only allow the college to be in touch with you but if the school captures "demonstrated interested" this will help you. 

Note, not all schools college demonstrated interested. It's a good question to ask the admissions rep if they do. Most large, public universities do not. 

Reviewing the list of colleges attending and making a list of which booths you want to visit will also help you save time but also be open to stopping by a school you are not familiar. 

Treat your interaction with the admission rep like a mini, informal interview. Make eye contact, smile and have a question or two to ask. The admission reps want to speak with you so make sure you are asking the questions.
