6th grade math teachers strongly encourage all students to take Math 6 rather than skipping ahead to Foundations of Algebra. This is because Math 6 introduces many brand-new concepts that are not covered in Foundations of Algebra—but are expected to already be understood.
Skipping Math 6 means students may miss out on essential foundational skills that are critical for future math success. If acceleration is a goal, a better option is to take Math 6, then consider skipping Math 7 later on. Math 7 and Math 8 include more review, which makes it easier to accelerate at that point without missing key instruction.
