Hello 1st grade parents! I am looking forward to working with you and the students this year! Please use this site as a resource to know what topics your child will be learning about throughout the year. Guidance is a special for 30 minutes every other week, Tuesday and Thursday. We cover many topics throughout the year, however, the topics always fall within academic, social/emotional, or career education. Your child may want to share with you the topics we discuss throughout the school year. To make this easier, I will always try to provide "extension questions" for each lesson to help facilitate meaningful conversations at home.
Our School Counseling program is both preventative and responsive. If you need to consult with me about any concerns you may have surrounding your child's school or home life, please feel free to contact me via email Noah.Kachman@lcps.org.
The children have been introduced to their school counselor and have learned what the school counselor role is. We used the book, "What is a Counselor?"

The first graders will be reviewing Stop, Walk, and Talk throughout October. Students will also be reviewing their own behaviors while looking at new ways to help others.
1st grade reviewed Stop, Walk, and Talk and the difference between bullying and conflicts. King of the Playground depicted how many times it took for a situation to go from a peer conflict (1 or 2 times of meanness) to bullying (3 or more).

First grade this month are going over how to be helpful and responsible people - at home and at school. We discussed what chores, tasks, and responsibilities we take care of so that others do not do them for us.
At Home Extension Questions:
Responsibility isn't just about chores and tasks we take care of, but also about our actions and how they impact those around us!
At Home Extension Questions:
In the month of December, the first grade focused on learning about Diversity. The students learned that everyone has their own uniqueness, that we should respect the similarities and differences between us, and that we can expand our horizons by learning about the people around us!
For the first half of the diversity lessons, the students participated in reading I'm Gonna Like Me. We learned that not everyone is exactly the same, even if we do have some similarities. It is all right to be different and to explore the world with these differences!

Materials: I'm Gonna Like Me, I'm a Rainbow handout
As we experience the first cold weathers of the season and part of our diversity learning, the children reviewed how snowflakes have some similarities and some differences! Just like snowflakes, we too have similarities and differences that make us each unique! Maybe you look similar or different from someone else, maybe your family speaks a second or third language, or even celebrates a different holiday!
At Home Extension Questions:
Materials: Snowflake presentation, creating your own snowflake
For the month of January, we discussed good sportsmanship and teamwork. The students were able to describe why teamwork can be a good thing when completing multiple tasks at once. We discussed how roles given to team members can help us solve problems, get good grades, score goals, and help others.
Materials: Ant Bully team video.
To continue the discussions from the previous class, we focused on teamwork. The 1st classes focused on what teamwork was by definition, examples of teamwork, and why it is important. The students were able to describe teamwork on sports teams such as talking to coaches and teammates, cheering on friends, and scoring points. The students were also able to provide examples of "adult jobs" that required teamwork such as firefighters, doctors, professional football, and vets.
Materials: Teamwork PPT, Hula Hoop Elevator and team exercises.
This month, the first grade students were double dipping into kindness and career lessons. For kindness, the students were challenged to think about acts of kindness. We discussed how being kind to others can help make others feel good, as well as make us feel better about ourselves. The students were quite able to describe acts of kindness, and were willing to attempt acts of kindness (even on days when we don't feel our best). Several students made suggestions such as volunteering with their organizations (Girl/Boy scouts, feeding the homeless, collecting cans, etc).
Materials: Be Kind Read A Loud, Thinking Cloud handout.
The students began their introduction to careers. They discussed what a career was, what sort of jobs a career would include, and thought about something that interested them. As part of the discussion, the students were also challenged to think about the jobs they know and what jobs they would like to try. The students watched a video of children who expressed jobs they would like to have when they grow up.
