LCPS CAMPAIGN TO REDUCE ROAD CONGESTION
Traffic congestion has increased steadily over the years and is an issue in Loudoun County; it comes as no surprise that congestion around Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) facilities has also increased. To help alleviate this problem, LCPS has launched a “Congestion Must Go” campaign, focused on minimizing traffic congestion in and around school campuses, surrounding road networks and neighboring communities. The goal of the “Congestion Must Go” campaign is to actively promote bus ridership, walking, biking and carpooling, while increasing student safety.
First of all, I want to thank all of our families that regularly utilize LCPS bus transportation. However, we need your assistance to reduce the morning kiss and ride traffic on our campus. During the 20 minute drop-off window in the morning, we have over 140 cars utilizing the kiss and ride lane in the morning. On some days, the number is closer to 180 cars. The parking lot is not designed to handle the volume of vehicles entering the campus in the morning. Also, the morning vehicle traffic creates congestion for our neighbors on Coton Commons Drive.
As much as possible, we are asking all families to use the LCPS bus transportation that is provided to our students. Students that ride the bus arrive to school on time and are not rushing to class to beat the morning bell. Thank you for working with us to reduce the vehicle traffic on our campus.
Respectfully,
Mr. Brazina
Principal

Student Leadership Meeting
Tales By Twilight Literacy Event (6:30-7:30
Students need to be at the bus stop 5 minutes before their scheduled pickup time. Students who are behind schedule and are rushing to their bus stop create an unsafe environment for the bus riders and bus drivers. As the students are loading the bus, the bus drivers are monitoring car traffic for the safety of students. Students running to the bus stops creates a diversion that the drivers have to monitor. If you have any questions about your bus stop, please contact Seldens Landing Elementary or Daryl Hardy, LCPS Lead Driver, at daryl.hardy@lcps.org.

PALs and DRA Assessment Window Opens
Students in grades KG-2 are primarily administered the PALs assessment. The DRA is administered as a mid-year checkpoint for students in grades 1-2 and as needed in grades 3-5 depending on student progress.
What is PALs? The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) is a screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring tool that focuses on the fundamental literacy skills. The assessment offers instruments for PreK, K, and 1-3, with a Spanish version available as well. PALS is the state-provided screening assessment for Virginia's Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI). PALS Quick Checks also provide an opportunity for educators to monitor student progress.
What is DRA?
The DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) is an individualized reading assessment that enables teachers to evaluate growth in student reading performance over time. The DRA identifies a student’s independent reading level. This is the level at which a student can read successfully without assistance. Oral reading should be fluent and free of overt signs of tension. The assessment measures student’s accuracy in word recognition and reading comprehension.
