Dance auditions:
The choreography team will teach a section of a dance from the musical. All performers must participate in the dance audition. Please dress in athletic attire (or dance attire) and shoes you can dance in. You must wear shoes. Expect to stay for the entire dance audition. Leaving early will affect your audition score.
If, in the character descriptions below, a character is described as a "strong dancer," you must complete the dance section with higher accuracy & intensity than average to be eligible for that role.
Vocal auditions:
Performers will learn cuts from Mamma Mia songs at the audition workshop. Each performer must choose one audition song, memorize it, and sing it along to the track provided. We will also test your vocal range by having you sing scales. No need to prep for this portion--we will take you through it. Vocal auditions will be done one at a time; you will not sing in front of anyone except for the audition panel and stage managers. However, at callbacks, you will sing in front of the group. You may leave when you have finished singing your song.
Acting auditions:
Actors will be called up onstage to perform scenes from the musical. You are not guaranteed to read for the character of your choice, but you will read at least one time. Actors are not required to have scenes memorized, but because you will receive them a week ahead of time at the audition workshop, it is highly recommended that you become very familiar with the scenes. Expect to stay for the entire time. Leaving early will affect your score.
For callbacks, actors MUST be prepared to sing ANY song from the musical. Sheet music will be provided (it doesn't need to be memorized, but honestly, if you prepared you should know the lyrics and music to songs that fit your type). Do your homework! Actors are expected to remain at callbacks for the entire time. Leaving early will affect your audition score.
Selection Process
Students are cast using a panel of judges. However, Ms. Marks has the final say when it comes to the cast list.
Each judge will use a rubric to score auditions.
The highest audition scores will be cast in the roles best suited for them.
Other factors impact casting as well, and are part of the rubric.
Things that impact casting that have nothing to do with "talent":
Behavior in the audition room, in school, and in previous productions
Ability to take direction
Room and mindset for growth as a performer
Dependability
Courage to make BIG CHOICES onstage
Rehearsal attendance during previous productions
Taking theatre classes
Ability to memorize lines and songs in previous productions
Ability to memorize dance and blocking in previous productions
Rehearsal availability.
If it's close between you and someone else for a role, and someone else has an edge on you in one of the categories above, they may be the one chosen. It's important to be professional and mature, because these things do impact casting!
Be a person who is good to work with, and people will want to work with you. Make things difficult, and you will lose future opportunities. This is a life lesson.
General audition tips
Behavior at auditions and callbacks is part of your score. If you talk while an adult is talking, are disruptive, leave trash, etc., it WILL lower your score and will affect your placement. If you are helpful, kind, prepared, and respectful, it will raise your score. I can think of several instances where I was close to casting someone in a leading role, but didn't because of the way they acted during the audition process. Don't be that person. Every moment you are in the theatre wing is part of your audition, including audition workshops. Treat others with respect. Do not interrupt adults when they are talking to you. Clean up after yourself. Be a decent person.
Bring water.
Auditions are closed. Only the students auditioning and the judges are permitted.
Put away your cell phone and turn it off. If your phone makes noise during auditions, you will be asked to leave and will not be invited back.
Do not talk in the hall when someone else is auditioning. There is only one wall between the hall and the audition room, so noise does carry.
Spit out your gum. If you audition with gum in your mouth, your score will be affected.
Bring a quick snack to eat during the break.
When you have finished your audition on vocal audition day, you are free to go. On the other audition days, if you leave early, your score will be impacted.
When auditions/callbacks are over, everyone is expected to leave immediately. The longer you stay, the longer you will have to wait for decisions to be made. Clear the room so that the judges can talk.
