Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Poor Maddy has one of the rarest conditions in the world, most easily summed up as being allergic to the outside. For seventeen years she has never left her house, seeing only her mother and her nurse — until one day out of a moving truck next door jumps Olly, the boy with whom she quickly falls in love and decides to literally risk her life for by going out of her house.
Review from School Library Connection Star:
In her debut novel, Nicola Yoon crafts a beautiful story of first love, taking chances, and betrayal. Trapped in her home due to a rare disease, Madeline's life is limited to her mother, her nurse, her books, and the world she sees through her window. Filling her days with online learning and reading, Madeline is content, until the day she sees Olly move in next door. Their relationship begins through the window, moves online, and Madeline eventually enlists the help of her nurse in order to meet Olly in person. When Madeline observes Olly being beaten by his father, she puts her life at risk by rushing outside to offer him support. The use of foreshadowing does just enough to make readers question Madeline's disease, but plot twists keep readers second guessing themselves. Written in a multi-genre format, readers will glean information from illustrations they otherwise would not get from the text.
