Application Process
Step 1: How to Apply
Begin the application process by completing the Common Application, Coalition Application OR by applying directly to the institution.
Students applying via Common App must match their Common App account to SchooLinks. This video explains the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jueIOzvkV-I
Common App: https://www.commonapp.org/
Coalition Application: https://coalitionforcollegeaccess.org/
Make a list or chart of your application deadlines. See College Application Worksheet below.
It is recommended you apply to 4-6 schools.
If you are applying for honors programs, they may have earlier deadlines.
Step 2: Transcript Request
Request a high school transcript - see Transcript Request Form below. You will need to add the colleges to SchooLinks and complete the Transcript Request Form.
If a student took a Dual Enrollment class in high school, they need to request transcripts directly from the college: JMU, NOVA or Shenandoah.
Be aware of application deadlines. You must submit a signed Transcript Request form two weeks before your application deadline to the LCH Counseling Office. Drop off your Transcript Request Form to Ms. Rose in the Counseling Office.
Completing the Transcript Request Form on your Chromebook:
1. Open document.
2. Click download. Download manager on bottom right of screen will show download complete. Click it.
3. Complete form. You may list up to 5 schools per form.
Step 3: Entrance Exams
Request SAT/ACT scores: you must contact College Board (SAT) www.collegeboard.org and ACT www.act.org directly to have your scores sent to the colleges you are applying to.
If needed, register to take the SAT and/or ACT.
Virginia schools that are test optional: https://www.jennthetutor.com/testoptional-schools-in-virginia
Step 4: Request Letter of Recommendation
Request in-person/through email and through SchooLinks.
Ask teachers/coaches/mentors about writing a letter of recommendation.
Remember to give your recommenders plenty of time to write the letter and remind them of your application deadlines.
If you would like a letter from someone who does not work at LCH, follow these steps in SchooLinks:
Search for “outside” in the search bar
Click “Add them manually”
You will need to provide the person’s name and email address
Step 5: Final Steps
Check and revise your applications and essays.
Submit your applications.
Write thank you notes to those who wrote a letter of recommendation for you or helped with your applications.
Start looking for and applying for scholarships.
Mr. West in the Career Center can help you with this.
