What opportunities are available for students to visit the library?
LUNCH: Students may visit the library after they finish eating lunch in the cafeteria by asking for a pass from one of the adults in the cafeteria. Students then come to the library, sign in at the front desk, and remain in the library for the remainder of their lunch period.
RESOURCE: Students may request an e-hall pass from their resource teacher to visit the library to check out a book, complete homework and research assignments.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Students are scheduled to visit the library every two weeks with their language arts teacher in 6th and 7th grade and through resource for the 8th grade.
BEFORE SCHOOL: Students must check in with the dean at their morning gathering area to request permission to visit the library.
Do you have to have a library card to check out books?
No, middle school and high school students in LCPS are not required to have library cards. Students may check out materials using their last name and/or student ID#.
How many items can a student check out at a time?
BOOKS: Book limits are based on grade level. Overall, we prefer students limit themselves to no more than 5 books at a time, but this is negotiable depending on need
How long can a student keep a book?
Students may keep books, audiobooks, and magazines for 2 weeks.
Can books be renewed?
Yes! To renew a book simply bring it to the library to be re-scanned and you may have it for another 2 weeks. Books may be renewed a maximum of three times. EXCEPTION: If a hold has been placed on the book by another student, the book cannot be renewed. (A "hold" is when some one has placed a request for a book when it is next returned.)
How can a student put a book on hold?
A student may request a book to be put on hold by filling out a hold slip and handing it in at the circulation desk. Holds will be processed in the order in which they are received.
Are there fines for overdue books?
No, we do not charge fines for overdue books. Overdue notices will be emailed to student school Gmail accounts quarterly and parents at the end of each semester.
What happens if a student loses or damages a book?
Borrowers must pay for or replace any item that has been lost or damaged beyond use. Books that have been significantly wet will be considered damaged beyond use. Payment can be cash or check made out to FSMS. If a student chooses to purchase a replacement copy of the book, the replacement must be the same book in the same format in new or like new condition (ie. if the original was hardcover, the replacement must be hardcover). If replacement cost is an issue, let us know. Financial assistance is available.
