We are thrilled to share our love of reading and writing with your child this year!
Our goal is for our students to develop strong reading and writing skills, enabling them to become critical thinkers and to confidently communicate information and ideas with others.
We ask that students read 20 minutes nightly in order to maintain and practice the skills they are learning at school. Reading can include books, magazines, instructions, recipes, lists, poetry, essentially anything that interests your child. Both reading silently and reading aloud are beneficial. Books and other reading materials may be selected at school or at home.
Should you have any questions, please share them with your child's language arts teacher.
Our focus during the first nine weeks will be reading fiction. Students will learn how to differentiate between fiction and nonfiction, now to identify the narrator of the story, how to compare and contrast story elements, how to summarize plot events, how to identify conflict and resolution, and how to ask and answer questions during and after reading. In writing, students will be learning to write a personal narrative.
Our focus during the second nine weeks will be reading nonfiction. Students will learn how to make, confirm, and revise predictions, how to draw conclusions, how to identify the author's purpose, how to identify the main idea and supporting details, how to summarize nonfiction, and how to preview and use text features. In writing students will be learning how to write an expository paragraph.
Our focus during the third nine weeks will be reading both fiction and nonfiction. Students will learn how to identify theme in a fiction selection and continue to practice all other previously taught skills. In writing, students will be learning how to write an opinion paragraph.
Our focus during the fourth nine weeks will to continue to read both fiction and nonfiction and review all previously taught skills. In writing, students will be learning how to write a short report.
Throughout the year, students will learning how to use their knowledge of letters and sounds to decode (read) words and to encode (spell) words correctly. Additionally students will be expanding their vocabulary by learning about synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. Students will use context clues, language structure and phonetic strategies to determine the meaning of new words.
