Our lab at Lewis-Clark State College uses Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruit fly, as a model for studying DNA replication, the biological importance and also consequences of repetitive DNA sequences, and the consequences of DNA damage in early development. We are currently investigating the role Blm DNA helicase plays in facilitating DNA replication through repetitive sequences and why Blm is essential for this function during the early development of Drosophila embryos. This research has implications for genetics, developmental biology, and evolutionary biology.
