What is Restorative Practices?
Restorative Practices (RP) is a philosophy and set of skills that helps with building relationships and resolving conflict. Though many people are initially drawn to the resolving conflict aspect first, it is often in the preventative aspects that RP finds its biggest impact. RP has skills around use of language, use of questions and use of circles that can be quickly employed to make an immediate impact in your life and with the relationships you have with people.
Why should I learn about Restorative Practices?
Life is increasingly complex these days, with seemingly more demands and less time. Still relationships are the bedrock of our existence. We simply cannot survive, or live our best lives, without healthy relationships. For this reason we need a simple framework for understanding and intervening moment to moment. RP gives us that. Ultimately it becomes a way of being in the world, a compass for navigating pretty much any situation you encounter. It does not make life easy necessarily, but it does make life easier.
How do I learn to be restorative?
This is going to be different for everyone. Obviously a certain amount of training will be helpful at the outset, but training alone will not do it, especially given the personal and potentially emotional area of changing habits and patterns. We need to incorporate these changes into our life. For that reason starting small, having support, exercising an element of perseverance and enjoying the journey (when and where possible) will go a long way to making the changes you need.
