Brian tries to understand and articulate how he defines himself through the connection between social media and his love of Hip-Hop. He illustrates his views through his video, his music, his dance and his words.

Smith writes a reflection about what he learned in Social Media and ME class:

What i learned in Social Media ?

Out of all the classes i took this was one was really different because we don’t write alot, we do everything on our computers and this is the first time i had a class like this. This is why i really liked it... I'm going to start talking about gaming. In this class we talked alot about it. We even had people visit the class to talk about video games and the positive impact on gamers. I also learned that there are a lot of gamers who play video games in the class so this topic came up very often. People also started arguing if video games are bad or good for peolple. My opnion on video games after all i learned changed. I learned how video games can be positive it can develop someones brain and it can teach you things that can be useful in the real wolrd... Thanks to everyone who shared their opinion on it... Social media is a big part of evryones life so this topic was very important. We learned about what to do on social media and what not to do. People use social media for different things but whatever you use it for dont cyber bully someone becaase you could cause the person to commit suicide... I learned alot of things in this class. One of the things that i learned was when we talked about how social media can impact someones life. Sometimes it can also lead to someone commiting suicide.Thats why you have to be careful when your on social media... I would like to recommend this class to people who are interested in learning more about social media. This class i great if you want to make new friends and socialize with people.

Joey answers a questionnaire related to the ideas of “healthy gaming, preventing addiction and educating by informing others” which were discussed in class and later researched:

We learned in class that addiction has been linked to gaming. Whether you agree or not that gaming is addictive and can potentially be dangerous for the mental and emotional well-being of certain people, this idea is worth exploring. Answer the following questions to see what you understand about addiction and gaming.

  1. What is addiction? The fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.
  2. Can you name some addictions? Drugs, alcohol, pornography
  3. What are the potential dangers of addiction? An addiction can be dangerous when it disturbs the regular function of your life. When you depend on it to survive basically. It becomes a danger when you can’t live without it.
  4. Why can gaming become addictive? It can become addictive because you have the urge to always level up and gain points (depending on the game) that feeling of always getting better and leveling up can become addictive. Also the fun of it can be addictive if you play with your friends then that can become a problem because that can be the only thing you do with your friends instead of going out to play sports, going to eat at a restaurant..etc
  5. We have all encountered someone in our lives who is or has struggled with addiction. Some of you personally might have struggled with addiction. How do you know when someone might be addicted to gaming (or any other addiction)? You might see it in their way of acting or interacting with you. They might be aggressive or less patient with things. Some may be less sociable, or they won't feel like doing anything with their friends or family.
  6. What are the signs of addiction? Less sociable, less patient, mood swings, health problems
  7. Can we help someone struggling with addiction? Yes you can help them out by talking to them about their gaming addiction and maybe try to find solutions that will benefit and help them reduce the amount of time that they play video games. Example: Set a maximum of hours per week or day that they can play.
