Social Media and ME : A virtual classroom journey (in adult education)
This workshop explores how adult learners tell their stories online and make sense of their lives. With the option course Social Media and ME, I attempted to meet the students on the platforms where they live and learn. In this interactive session, I will illustrate how our classroom extended beyond the physical walls of the classroom and into a variety of online spaces. I will outline my course goals and discuss, through specific examples, how students had the opportunity to explore and reflect on their understanding of social media in order to feel more grounded and confident in their abilities and unique personalities. I will invite participants in this workshop to reflect on problems as well as possibilities related to social media use as a pedagogical and reflective tool in the classroom. Tracy Rosen, accompanied my students and I on this journey through ongoing advice and ideas and by designing a specific lesson on SELFIES.
Caroline Mueller
When Caroline told me about her course, I wanted to learn more. I think the subject is important for our students - Social Media plays such a large role in their lives - and as an educator I feel a certain responsibility to work through this area of their lives, to explore it with them, so that they can make informed decisions about who they are as people, as citizens, whether off or online. I'm thankful to Caroline for giving me some insight into this area of their lives through this course and for inviting me into her classroom.
