George Smoot, along with John Mather, won the 2006 Nobel Prize for physics “for their discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation”. One year later, in 2007, George Smoot turned his vision of helping Physics teachers & students expand their knowlegde of the lastest discoveries in Astrophysics from the experts at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab into the reality. The Physics in and Through Cosmology Workshop ran the first summer workshop.
Previous to the workshop, George Smoot, along with Keay Davidson wrote the book, Wrinkles in Time: Witness to the Birth of the Universe. Stephen Hawking called “The scientific discovery of the century, if not all time.” This book, explained cosmology and the CMB experiments documenting the origin of the creation of the universe. The https://universeadventure.org/ brought the cosmos to students and the general public. This websites developement was guided by George Smoot (LBNL), Michael Barnett (LBNL), Eric Linder (LBNL), and Henry Muehry (University of Basel), and developed by students and teachers.
George encouraged the next generation to use their curiosity, creativity & desire to know, to explore, & to question the universe around them to further their own scientific knowledge and develop as future scientists.
Any of us privileged enough to hear one of his talks, always walked away with new insights, new questions, and a desire to understand more. He was instrumental in helping so many teachers and students discover Cosmology and explore Astrophysics.
