These workshops are intentionally internal to those affiliated with Berkeley Lab to create an environment in which we hope you can all feel comfortable sharing your ideas. We’ve asked you to attach your headshot and names to your slides so we know which ideas are yours.
To encourage open communication, we expect all participants to treat the ideas presented in this workshop as private, unless they get express permission to share another person’s idea with a broader audience. As well, sharing an idea in this workshop does not preclude you from proposing it to another funding agency, foundation, or investor.
Finally, please keep in mind we're looking for long-term examples of science that could be performed 5-10 years from now in these envisioned buildings and leverage our world-class facilities, renowned scientists, and team science tradition.
Identify long-term science priorities that Berkeley Lab is uniquely suited to address in chemistry and materials sciences related to the DOE Office of Science and beyond, which could be enabled through new buildings at Charter Hill.
Propose 1–2 “anchor concepts” related to the workshop topic. Anchor concepts are visionary ideas, like advanced, custom facilities, that could underpin the science case for a building. The Chemical Observatory is a previously identified anchor concept for Charter Hill. EcoPODs are an anchor concept for the BioEPIC building.
Provide some specific “case studies” of science that could be accomplished with Charter Hill capabilities.
Identify and describe capabilities and instrumentation/tools needed to address the science priorities, noting those that LBNL currently has access to and those that would need to be newly acquired or developed.
Delineate infrastructure needs to support the capabilities or to facilitate collaboration that’s essential to accomplish the science.
Suggest possible LDRD topics that could lead to ESA prioritization in the next few years that would enable progress towards the longer-term vision of Charter Hill science and capabilities.
