 A literature review is a critical summary and evaluation of the existing research (e.g., academic journal articles and books) on a specific topic.

In science research, we conduct a literature review to look for GAPS in current knowledge and seek to solve them in the form of a research project. 

The purpose of a literature review is to collect relevant, research on a chosen topic, and synthesize it into a cohesive summary of existing knowledge in the field. The goal is to search for the gap in scientific literature and then propose an argument on that topic for conducting original research.
