The goal for this course is to prepare students for AP courses, the EOC, the ACT and post-secondary education. Advanced English II is a writing-intensive course. Advanced students will work to create more sophisticated writing in a variety of genres following the six-trait writing approach. Students will be able to identify the types of writing. They will also write numerous formal and informal pieces, applying the skills and thought needed for each type. Advanced students will hone their literary analysis skills. Some of the pieces may include: a vignette, character portrayal, object/scene description, compare/contrast essay, anecdote, personal narrative, autobiography, memoir, editorials, persuasive essays/letters, ads/public service announcements, research, etc. Students may also prepare a piece of their writing for a formal presentation/speech. Students will complete vocabulary, spelling, and daily oral language exercises. They will be expected to respond on a regular basis to journal prompts/daily oral language and have a book with them to read each day. Advanced students will read a variety of challenging fiction and nonfiction texts from various cultures, increasing in levels of difficulty throughout the year. Students will be expected to demonstrate significant analysis through close reading of these texts. All students will be expected to read a significant amount outside of school and be prepared to participate in critical discussions of the texts they read.
