Advisory Updates from Mr. Starner, Director of Social and Emotional Learning
Grade 7
3/13/26
Hello 7th grade parents! Things have been moving along smoothly during our RULER classes, and students will be continuing the unit they had started where they seek to broaden their understanding of their own identity/story and how this can affect their mindset and belief in themselves. Students will read the following quote and reflect on what it means to them: “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” After reviewing this quote as a class, students will reflect on times in school where they either did or did not feel ready to learn. We will explain to students that part of growing our emotional intelligence skills is recognizing and understanding the different emotional patterns in our lives. After paying closer attention to what we feel, when, and with whom, we may be able to better regulate our emotions to be more compassionate and productive. The first step is understanding what these patterns are so that we can then figure out what to do with this knowledge. If you have any questions about SEL in the 7th grade, please reach out to jstarner@lawrenceschool.org Thanks!

Hello 8th grade parents! We continue to have great learning and discussions during our RULER classes, and students will be continuing on with the unit they had started where they seek to broaden their understanding of their own identity/story and reflect on how this can affect their mindset and belief in themselves. Students will read the following quote and reflect on what it means to them: “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” After reviewing this quote as a class, students will be asked to reflect on times in school where they either did or did not feel ready to learn. Thank you and if you have any questions about SEL in 8th grade, please reach out to jstarner@lawrenceschool.org Thanks!
