Advisory Updates from Mr. Starner, Director of Social and Emotional Learning
Grade 7
12/12/25
Hello 7th grade parents! We continue to see great things happening in our Ruler classes with in depth discussion and fun role plays. This week students will discuss and practice skills that can help them if involved in a conflict. All communities, especially those with diverse ideas, will have instances of disagreement. How we manage conflict and disagreement determines our effectiveness. We can use emotion regulation strategies to cope with conflicts that cannot be resolved. Though not all problems can be resolved, we can learn from all conflicts. Everyone approaches and handles conflict in different ways, and all communities will have instances of conflict. Questions the class will consider are: Why is it important to reflect on another person’s feelings as well as our own in a conflict? How can we make sure all points of view are recognized during a conflict? The class as a whole will talk about these questions and work together to answer. At the close of the lesson, students will reflect on the fact that there are often multiple sides to a story and that we can always work to build our perspective-taking and empathy-building skills. If you have any questions about SEL in the 7th grade, please reach out to jstarner@lawrenceschool.org Thanks!
